BIOGRAPHY

Laura Potter is a tubist, music educator, conductor, and arts administrator. She is currently a freelance musician in the Cleveland area.

Dr. Laura Potter is an experienced performer and educator with specialization in brass pedagogy. She was the Instructor of Tuba at Indiana State University in 2016, the Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Dickinson State University in 2014-2015 and previously taught courses at the University of Kansas and the University of Memphis. Laura has also served as the low brass instructor in the Noblesville (IN) and Pendleton (IN) schools, an instrumental instructor in the Bonner Springs/Edwardsville school district in Kansas, taught at the Midwest Music Academy (KS), and adjudicated band and solo and ensemble festivals in Indiana, North Dakota, Kansas and Tennessee.

 

In 2012-2013 Laura was a Fulbright Research Fellow researching Nordic solo and chamber repertoire and pedagogy for brass at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was named a finalist for the 2014 Clifford Bevan Award for Excellence in Research.

 

Laura holds a Bachelors of Music from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, a Masters in Music from the University of Memphis Scheidt School of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Kansas.

 

Laura has performed professionally with the Indianapolis Brass Choir, the Billings Symphony (MT), the Lafayette Symphony (IN), Kansas City Brassworks, the University of Kansas Faculty Brass Quintet, the Appalachian Brass (featured ensemble at the 2008 International Brass Chamber Music Festival), and the Glendale Symphony (CA). She has been a featured soloist with the Dickinson City Band (ND) and the Bonner Springs City Band (KS). In 2012 Laura provided the sonic backdrop for an interdisciplinary performance piece with glass artist Jocelyne Prince at the 2012 European Glass Context on Bornholm (Denmark).

 

Laura's influential teachers include Tommy Johnson, Jim Self, Norm Pearson, Kevin Sanders, Scott Watson, and Jens Bjørn Larsen.
